Interview ( p1of3) with Şener Elcil, Secretary General of the KTOS Teacher's Union, about the General Strike in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus called for 28th January 2011, broadcast by Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation Biz Emeis Program on 25th January 2011. Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WMNlUX4B4I Part 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ3Fh1sjT00 Şener Elcil, repeats his charge that Turkey continues its policy of assimilation of the Turkish Cypriot Community through a deliberate policy of placing hundreds of thousands of mainland settlers in the part of Cyprus occupied by Turkish troops since its invasion in 1974. He explains that Turkey should be taken to the international court at the Hague by the Cyprus government and accused of violations of the Geneva Convention regarding the continuing war crime of changing the demographic structure of the occupied parts of Cyprus consequent to an act of war. According to 'official statistics' (in Turkish occupied Cyprus) the population in 2004 was 264,000 people, then when Talat came to power he said the population was 500,000 while other sources claimed it was 720,000. There are believed to be more than 400,000 registered mobile phones and the same number of vehicles, while the level of bread consumption is at more than 810,000 loaves daily. The movement calls for an official census to be conducted under international supervision. The platform he speaks for has called a General Strike for 28th January 2011 which is supported by 28 unions, including those whose supporters had voted for the ruling UBP Eroglu party. There are two views within the joint platform, one of which holds that the 'ruling party', UBP, and the past 'governments' are responsible for the social, economic and general circumstances which prevail. Others, including our union holds Ankara responsible as well as past 'governments'. Question: What will the union movement do to prevent a repetition of what happened to the 'This Country is Ours Movement'? Answer: I was heavily involved in that movement and we are actively seeking to prevent this movement now being coopted, being taken over, or being delivered to third parties. -------- See also: http://cyprusindymedia.blogspot.com/2011/01/general-strike-and-gathering-on-friday.html Wednesday , 26 January 2011 A General Strike and Gathering on Friday the 28th of January - By Şener Elcil, KTOS, Secretary General ------------ http://aspectsofreality.blogspot.com/2010/09/serer-ercil-un-and-eu-officials-turn.html Şener Elcil - "UN and EU officials turn blind eye to Turkey's settler policy in Cyprus" ------------ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmN0SZijVtU Izzet Izcan - Turkey threatens Cypriots with annihilation 1of3 Interview, in Turkish with English subtitles, with Izzet Izcan, Secretary General of the Turkish Cypriot political party "United Cyprus", about the outcome of the 'elections' in Turkish-occupied Cyprus in April 2010 with Dervis Eroglu replacing Mehmet Ali Talat as leader of the Turkish Cypriots, the political situation in Cyprus and prospects for the intercommunal talks which recommence on 26th May.
