Overview of AHDR's Activities

AHDR’s inter-communal educational discussions, seminars, workshops and projects have been organised in collaboration with key partners, such as civil society organizations and teacher trade unions across the divide in Cyprus and organisations abroad, including the Council of Europe, EUROCLIO, the Center for Democracy and Reconciliation in Southeast Europe (CDRSEE), and the Oxford University Center for Inter-group Conflict.

In September 2009, AHDR launched ‘Multiperspectivity and Intercultural Dialogue in Education’, a comprehensive two year project involving research, setting up of an archive and library, conferences, teacher training workshops, and the development of supplementary materials. This initiative is supported by UNDP-ACT, while partial support for AHDR’s research programme is provided by the European Commission.

In tandem with this, AHDR has purchased and is now restoring a building in the UN Buffer Zone. Opening in Spring 2011, the Home for Cooperation will be the first venue on the island that is a truly collaborative, intercommunal and civil society led effort. It will house a research and educational centre (centre for young people and educators, multi-functional conference room, centre for exhibitions and archives, library and work place for NGOs) which will revitalise the ‘dead zone’ and create prospects for peace and stability in Cyprus. For further information, please visit the Home for Cooperation page.

Since its formation, the Association has undertaken a number of activities to advance its goals, seeking to engage educators and educational policy-makers. AHDR’s work centers on:

  • Research: to nurture a more critical understanding of the linkages between perceptions of history, attitudes and behaviours towards the other community, and history education. Click here for more information.

  • Policy Dialogue: to develop policy recommendations that promote multiperspectivity and share these with policymakers. Click here for more information.

  • Library and Archive: to collect and share resources on history and history teaching within the Home for Cooperation and to gather archival materials on certain aspects of Cyprus history. Click here for more information.

  • Teacher training: to create opportunities for educators to be exposed to and equipped with the latest techniques in history teaching.  Click here for more information.

  • Supplementary educational materials: to develop materials for educators and students that foster multiperspectivity and historical understanding.  Click here for more information.

  • Public awareness: to promote greater understanding of multiperspectivity, by developing hosting conferences and discussions, organizing film programs, developing communications products such as video-blogs.  Click here for more information.

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research of Cyprus recognises the values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, the covenants of Human Rights issued by the United Nations, and the UNESCO  recommendations relevant to history teaching.

Mission: to  defend  and  promote  productive dialogue and research in issues regarding history and history teaching to strengthen peace, stability, democracy and critical thinking.

Since its foundation, the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) has enlisted members from various ethnic, linguistic, and professional backgrounds working at various educational levels in Cyprus , making the first steps of a greater effort: an effort to maintain a continuous, productive dialogue about enhanced pedagogic practices that would encourage the values of the discipline of history. Its Board, comprising Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot educators and historians, is a brilliant example of how productive cooperation; creative ideas and respect can blossom across the divide.
