ABOUT AHDR’S PAST ACTIVITIES

In an effort to reflect upon and embrace methodological approaches, which promote critical and historical thinking, the Association has held a number of events, beginning with an educational seminar in February 2004 entitled 'What does it mean to think historically? Approaches to teaching and learning history', received very positive written and oral feedback from the 250 academics, researchers and educators who came together from all over Cyprus, across disciplinary and linguistic boundaries to discuss ways in which historical thinking could be advanced. Shortly thereafter, AHDR began a collaboration with the Council of Europeand with EUROCLIO to organize teacher training opportunities for educators in Cyprus.

Along with organizing numbers of events (listed below), such as conferences, seminars, workshops and trainings, AHDR also promotes the adoption of new practices in history teaching by developing supplementary educational materials. In October 2008, it collaborated with the CDRSEE’s Joint History Project to launch a series of workbooks on the history of the Balkans. In October 2009, AHDR launched ‘Nicosia is Calling’, a set of activity guides for primary and secondary school students developed by its members which fosters a multi-perspective understanding of the old city. For further information please see the publications page.

In December 2008 AHDR developed its policy on history education through publishing its History Education Reform Proposal, in response to the process of curricular change that was initiated in the Greek Cypriot community. This document forms the basis of AHDR’s outlook and vision for the future of history education in Cyprus.

AHDR’s inter-communal educational discussions, seminars, workshops and projects have been organised in collaboration with key partners, such as civil society organizations and teacher trade unions across the divide in Cyprus and organisations abroad, including the Council of Europe, EUROCLIO, the Center for Democracy and Reconciliation in Southeast Europe (CDRSEE), and the Oxford University Center for Inter-group Conflict.

LIST OF PAST AHDR EVENTS:

  • History Education International Symposium ‘How to Think Historically: 6 Years On’, organised by the AHDR and supported by IKME & Friedrich Ebert Stiftung as part of the MIDE Project, 7-8 May 2010.

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) wishes to thank all those who contributed to the success of the International Symposium on History Education, which took place on 7 and 8 May 2010, in Nicosia. The participants had an opportunity to talk with highly distinguished European academics and researchers and to hear about the latest developments and innovative ideas around the teaching of history. Together with the internationally renowned academics, Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot researchers contributed their own documented positions to the dialogue.

AHDR also wishes to clarify once again that the title of the Symposium “What Does it Mean to Think Historically: 6 Years On?” was chosen because six years have passed since the AHDR’s first conference. That conference, which took place in February 2004 and marked the beginning of fruitful dialogue on issues of history teaching in Cyprus, was entitled “What Does it Mean to Think Historically?”

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research is a non-profitable, non-governmental organisation with a rich record of activities, publications, awards and co-operation networks in Cyprus and abroad, and whose aim it to promote historical thinking through research and dialogue.

White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue:"Living Together As Equals in Dignity" Launched by the Council of Europe Ministers of Foreign Affairs at their 118th Ministerial Session
    (Strasbourg, 7 May 2008)

The "White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue" , emphatically argues in the name of the governments of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe that our common future depends on our ability to safeguard and develop human rights, as enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights, democracy and the rule of law and to promote mutual understanding. It reasons that the intercultural approach offers a forward-looking model for managing cultural diversity. It proposes a conception based on individual human dignity (embracing our common humanity and common destiny). If there is a European identity to be realised, it will be based on shared fundamental values, respect for common heritage and cultural diversity as well as respect for the equal dignity of every individual. The White Paper is built on the solid foundations of the Council of Europe acquis. It takes account of the rich material from consultations with many stakeholders – including partners from regions outside Europe – held in 2007. In that sense, it is in many ways a product of the democratic deliberation which is at the heart of intercultural dialogue itself. read the paper

The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research of Cyprus recognises the values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, the covenants of Human Rights issued by the United Nations, and the UNESCO  recommendations relevant to history teaching.

Mission: to  defend  and  promote  productive dialogue and research in issues regarding history and history teaching to strengthen peace, stability, democracy and critical thinking.

Since its foundation, the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) has enlisted members from various ethnic, linguistic, and professional backgrounds working at various educational levels in Cyprus , making the first steps of a greater effort: an effort to maintain a continuous, productive dialogue about enhanced pedagogic practices that would encourage the values of the discipline of history. Its Board, comprising Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot educators and historians, is a brilliant example of how productive cooperation; creative ideas and respect can blossom across the divide.
